Campus Wi-Fi upgrades slipped down many enterprise roadmaps during the pandemic, when offices emptied and budgets moved elsewhere. With hybrid work now settled, Wi-Fi 7 is bringing them back. The first wave of access-point refreshes since 2021 is under way.

What is driving the refresh

  • Device density, with staff carrying laptops, phones and wearables
  • Video calls from open-plan spaces and small meeting rooms
  • Building systems, sensors and cameras joining the wireless network
  • Ageing access points approaching end of support
“Our offices are less full than in 2019, but the people who come in are all on video at the same time.”
Ethan Clarkson, Workplace Technology Lead

What Wi-Fi 7 adds

The new standard offers higher throughput and, more importantly for enterprises, better performance in crowded environments. Features that allow devices to use multiple bands at once improve reliability for latency-sensitive applications such as video conferencing.

Planning before buying

Network teams caution against assuming new access points will solve every problem. Many coverage complaints stem from poor placement, interference or outdated switching infrastructure that cannot support faster wireless speeds.

  • Survey sites before replacing hardware
  • Check switch capacity and power budgets
  • Align the refresh with office redesigns where possible

Making the case

Wi-Fi upgrades rarely excite boards. The strongest business cases tie the refresh to employee experience, hybrid-work strategy and support for smart-building initiatives rather than to raw speed alone.
