The average enterprise platform team now runs seven overlapping monitoring and observability tools. Each was bought for a good reason. Together, they have become one of the least visible line items in the technology budget — and a growing source of operational friction.

How sprawl happens

Observability tools accumulate the way most software does: one team adopts a logging platform, another prefers a different tracing tool, an acquisition brings its own APM vendor, and a cloud provider's native monitoring arrives for free. Nobody decides to run seven tools. It simply happens.

The hidden costs

Licence spend is the obvious cost, but rarely the largest one.

  • Data is ingested and stored several times over in different platforms
  • Engineers switch between consoles during incidents, slowing diagnosis
  • Alert rules diverge, so the same failure triggers different pages in different tools
  • Specialist skills are spread thin across platforms nobody fully masters
“During our worst outage last year, the evidence was in three tools and nobody had access to all of them.”
Marco Benetti, VP of Platform Engineering

Consolidation without a big bang

Teams that have reduced sprawl successfully tend to avoid a single dramatic migration. Instead, they standardise on an open telemetry format first, so data can flow to any backend, then retire tools one at a time as contracts come up for renewal.

Consolidation is becoming a board-level cost item for a simple reason: observability data volumes are growing faster than almost any other category of cloud spend. Getting control of the tooling is often the first step to getting control of the bill.
